This article refers to the ZF 6, 8 and 9 speed units.

If you’re experiencing a gearbox delay with a Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) vehicle, this can refer to a few different symptoms. Here’s a breakdown of what might be causing it, potential issues by model, and what steps to take next.

A gearbox delay usually refers to:

  • A hesitation when shifting gears (especially from Park to Drive or Reverse).
  • A lag in response when accelerating.
  • Jerky or delayed automatic gear changes while driving.

But most of our customers complain of a delay when pulling out at junctions, roundabouts or going for an over take.

Happily here at Tuning Emporium, we can help. As part of our remapping procedure we can also eliminate 99% of these flat spots, that customers face.

We do ask that the gearbox has been serviced before any tune takes place , to ensure the tune will work more effectively. JLR will say sealed for life which is rubbish, go on to ZF website, and they’ll recommend oil change every 60k!

From our 16 years in the tuning world, we can almost guarantee that customers will also experience better fuel economy too.

Most popular engines we remap:

2.2 FL2, Evoque, Discovery sport

3.0 TDV6 Disco4, 5 RR Sport

3.0 RR L405

3.6 TDV8 RR and RR Sport

4.4TDV8 RR and RR Sport

2.2 Jag XF

3.0 TDV6 XF, XF, F pace

If you own any of the above or any other JLR model, please get in touch with your Reg number to see how Tuning Emporium can help.

Tuning Emporium have been kept rather busy with French 1.5 and 1.6 Hdi engined vehicles, with ad blue problems. Most popular at present are the commercial van variants.

One of Tuning Emporium recent jobs was this 1.5 hdi Citroen Dispatch.

The PSA 1.5 BlueHDi is a diesel engine developed by the PSA Group (Peugeot-Citroën, now part of Stellantis). It is known for its efficiency, low emissions, and use in many small to mid-sized Peugeot, Citroën, DS, and Opel/Vauxhall models.

Here’s a breakdown of the engine:

🔧 Technical Overview:

  • Name: PSA DV5 / 1.5 BlueHDi
  • Type: Inline 4-cylinder diesel
  • Displacement: 1,499 cc (1.5 liters)
  • Configuration: DOHC, 16-valve
  • Fuel System: Common rail direct injection
  • Turbocharged: Yes – Single variable geometry turbo (VGT)
  • Emission Control: SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with AdBlue + DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)
  • Emission Standard: Euro 6d / Euro 6d-TEMP depending on model year
  • First Released: 2017–2018 (replacing the older 1.6 BlueHDi)

🔢 Power & Torque Outputs (Variants):

The 1.5 BlueHDi comes in several variants, with power outputs ranging depending on model:

VariantPower OutputTorqueCommon Models
BlueHDi 7575 hp (55 kW)~230 NmPeugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo (base vans)
BlueHDi 100100 hp (73 kW)~250 NmPeugeot 208, 2008, Citroën C3, Opel Corsa
BlueHDi 110110 hp (81 kW)~250-270 NmDS3 Crossback, Peugeot 308
BlueHDi 120 / 130120–131 hp (88–96 kW)~300 NmPeugeot 3008, 308, 508, Citroën C5 Aircross

Whilst it still uses a Bosch ECU , the process has slightly changed. Its managed by a Bosch MD1CS003.

Even when you disconnect battery for replacement, you have to leave it for 10 mins, before you re start due to inbuilt immobilizer. This in turn adds time to work on these engines for any mapping procedures.

This Citroen was bought in to us as non start due to ad blue pump fault.

So for these 1.5 Blue HDI engines with this ECU we would allow 4 hours to complete to be on the safe side.

Once we did an ad blue re set and solution, we left vehicle for 30 mins to be on the safe side to make sure all connections we sound before we started.

If you’re experiencing ad blue problems on your vehicle, contact us with your reg number to see how Tuning Emporium can help.

One of our recent jobs we had in was a 1.6CDTi Vauxhall Insignia, with has to be said, the worst swirl flaps we’ve ever seen.

Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves located within the intake manifold of some diesel and gasoline engines. Their primary function is to control the airflow entering the combustion chamber, improving the air-fuel mixture and enhancing engine efficiency, particularly at lower RPMs.

💡 How Swirl Flaps Work

  • At low RPMs, the flaps partially close, creating a swirling motion of the air. This increases air turbulence, promoting better mixing with fuel, which leads to more efficient combustion, improved torque, and lower emissions.
  • At higher RPMs, the flaps fully open, allowing maximum airflow for increased power output.

🔥 Benefits of Swirl Flaps

  • Improved fuel efficiency, especially at low engine loads.
  • Reduced emissions due to better combustion.
  • Enhanced low-end torque and drivability.

⚠ Potential Issues with Swirl Flaps

Swirl flaps can become a liability over time:

  • Carbon Buildup: Over time, carbon deposits accumulate around the flaps, reducing their effectiveness and potentially causing them to stick.
  • Flap Failure: In some cases, the flaps or their mounting screws can break off and be sucked into the engine, causing serious damage.
  • Reduced Performance: Malfunctioning flaps can lead to poor fuel economy, rough idling, or reduced engine power.

🔧 Swirl Flap Removal or Deactivation

Because of the potential risks, some car owners choose to remove or blank off the swirl flaps. This can improve reliability but may slightly reduce low-RPM efficiency. Some ECU tuning modifications also disable the swirl flap function without physically removing them.

ECU was a Delco E98

OBD full protocol followed.

Due to the huge carbon build up and slightly rough idling it was decided not to increase the BHP at this time.

As you can see from the photo’s the carbon was just immense.

How the engine was breathing and operating we’ll never know.

Another reason Tuning Emporium chose not to increase the power was down to the missing flap/s from the manifold.

Unfortunately a lot of the parts we had to remove to get to the manifold had become so brittle with heat build up.

Safe to say this took a lot of cleaning!!

The customer travelled 3 hours to come and see us at Tuning Emporium, good news travels far away 🙂

Swirl flap function deleted from ECU and car back on the road.

Here at Tuning Emporium we have lost count of the 2.7 TDV6 engines we have tuned, in the Range Rover Sport and the Land Rover discovery 3.

Tuning a Land Rover Discovery 3 (2004-2009) can improve performance, fuel efficiency, and off-road capability. The key areas to focus on are engine remapping, intake and exhaust upgrades, suspension enhancements, and drivetrain modifications.

The 2.7 TDV6 is a 2.7-liter turbocharged diesel V6 engine, primarily used in Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles, as well as some Peugeot and Citroën models. It was developed by Ford and PSA Group (Peugeot-Citroën) as part of their joint diesel engine program.

Key Specifications:

  • Engine Type: 2.7L V6 Turbo Diesel (TDV6)
  • Displacement: 2,720 cc
  • Configuration: 60° V6
  • Aspiration: Turbocharged (Variable Geometry Turbo)
  • Fuel System: Common Rail Direct Injection
  • Power Output: ~187 hp (140 kW) @ 4,000 rpm
  • Torque: ~440 Nm (345 lb-ft) @ 1,900 rpm
  • Bore x Stroke: 81 mm × 88 mm
  • Compression Ratio: ~17.3:1

Common Applications:

  • Land Rover Discovery 3 (LR3)
  • Land Rover Discovery 4 (early models)
  • Range Rover Sport (2005-2009)
  • Jaguar S-Type 2.7D
  • Jaguar XJ 2.7D
  • Peugeot 407 Coupe 2.7 HDi
  • Citroën C6 2.7 HDi

Whilst producing a healthy 190 bhp and 345 lb ft, there’s always room for a little more, without been to strenuios.

With our stage 1 tunes, we see 225 to 230bhp and 395lb ft of extra torque, always useful for towing. Mpg improvement of around 4 miles more to the gallon, auto or manual.

Of course before any tuning takes place Tuning Emporium carries out a full diagnostic check.

If there are any permanent diagnostic trouble codes relating to the engine, the remap process will no commence.

When performing an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) delete on a TDV8 engine, you’re typically looking to remove or disable the EGR valve and related components to improve performance and reduce the intake of exhaust gases into the combustion chamber. This modification can help increase engine efficiency, reduce soot buildup, and improve throttle response.

For a TDV8 engine specifically the general steps for an EGR delete typically include:

  1. EGR Valve Removal: Physically remove the EGR valve and associated pipes.
  2. EGR Cooler Removal: If present, remove the EGR cooler, which cools the exhaust gases before they enter the intake.
  3. Blanking Plates: Install blanking plates on the intake and exhaust sides to seal off the ports where the EGR system was connected.
  4. Software Remap: After hardware removal, the vehicle’s ECU (Engine Control Unit) must be remapped or reprogrammed to disable the EGR system and prevent error codes or warning lights from appearing. This can be done through our tuning software here at Tuning Emporium

Another slight tweak for this vehicle, fully removed the EGR coolers and pipework.

Blanking on the exhaust manifold, more pictures to follow.

TDV8 egr removal at Tuning Emporium

One of the main advantages is full removal is the lower exhaust gas temperatures.

But also less chance of the egr cooler pipes splitting,

better access to oil cooler and glow plugs . Tuning Emporium are big believers in preventative maintenance on all Land Rover and Range Rover models.

  • Turbo spools up quicker, and at lower revs (less turbo lag)
  •  Prevents carbon build-up inside intake manifold, and ports
  • Smoother pick up from idle and better fuel economy
  •  Cleaner engine oil helping to give longer engine life.
  • Lowers soot output (less smoke on pull off)
  • Less carbon entering the turbo/s

More detail to follow soon.

ECU remapping (Engine Control Unit remapping) is the process of modifying the software of a vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) to optimize its performance. The ECU is responsible for managing various engine parameters, such as fuel injection, ignition timing, and turbo boost, based on the information from sensors throughout the engine.

When remapping an ECU, Tuning Emporium modifies the pre-programmed settings in the ECU to enhance the vehicle’s performance, fuel efficiency, or other characteristics like smoother power delivery or a more aggressive throttle response.

There are several types of ECU remapping:

  1. Stage 1 Remapping: This is a basic remap, typically done on a stock vehicle without any major hardware modifications. It focuses on improving power, torque, and fuel economy by optimizing factory settings.
  2. Stage 2 Remapping: This involves more significant performance gains and typically requires hardware upgrades like a larger intercooler, upgraded exhaust, or a performance air intake system. The remap is adjusted to match these changes and maximize the engine’s potential.
  3. Stage 3 Remapping: For vehicles with extensive modifications such as turbo upgrades, new injectors, and custom intake/exhaust systems. This type of remapping requires precise tuning to extract maximum power while keeping the engine safe.

Benefits of ECU Remapping:

  • Increased horsepower and torque: Often seen as the primary benefit, especially for turbocharged engines.
  • Improved fuel efficiency: By optimizing the air-fuel ratio, ECU remapping can sometimes reduce fuel consumption.
  • Enhanced throttle response: A more immediate response when the accelerator is pressed.
  • Better overall driving experience: Smoother power delivery and performance gains.

Along with software deletes, another common issue we get asked to do, is swirl flap delete.

Most common models we do this for are:

BMW

Audi

Vauxhall

VW

VAG

Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves that are fitted to the intake manifold of many modern engines. Their purpose is to ensure that the air entering the cylinder is sufficiently turbulent for good fuel-air mixing even at low engine speeds.

The butterfly valves used in swirl flaps can become clogged with carbon deposits or seize due to wear and tear. By removing the swirl flaps, you eliminate the risk of failure, which can lead to costly repairs and potential engine damage

Benefits of removing swirl flaps:

Improved performance: Some drivers report that removing swirl flaps results in smoother engine operation and better throttle response.

Increased fuel efficiency: Swirl flap removal can improve fuel efficiency

Reduced maintenance costs: Removing swirl flaps can potentially reduce the long-term maintenance costs associated with repairs and replacements

Increased reliability: Swirl flaps are susceptible to wear and tear, and a failure can result in costly engine damage.

Here at Tuning Emporium, we have seen many vehicles suffer with this issue, and in some circumstances have seen fragments of the swirl flaps in the engine, when its been too late for the customer. Adding huge costs to their invoice.

If you have any questions on swirl flap delete, contact Tuning Emporium:

Been a while since last post, so here’s a selection of some recent work.

This lovely Jaguar XF was suffering from the dreaded EGR fault, which was hampering performance.

The Jaguar XF 3.0 TDV6 is a luxury car that combines performance with refinement. It features a 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine, typically producing around 240–275 horsepower, depending on the model and tuning. This engine is known for its blend of power and fuel efficiency, making it a popular choice for those who want both performance and long-distance comfort.

Key Specifications:

  • Engine: 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel (TDV6)
  • Power Output: Around 240-275 horsepower (depending on the variant)
  • Torque: Roughly 500–600 Nm (depending on the engine version)
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic or 8-speed automatic (depending on the model year)
  • 0-100 km/h: Approximately 7-8 seconds
  • Top Speed: Around 230 km/h (143 mph)
  • Fuel Economy: Between 5-7 liters per 100 km (depending on driving conditions and variant)
  • CO2 Emissions: Around 150–200 g/km (depending on the version)

This one, is the 240bhp model.

The ECU can be a pain to get to, so patience is key. We at Tuning Emporium will always bench tune these ECU’s. Other companies might say through OBD port, but we have seen what can go wrong.

Once we extracted ECU after checking for DTC’s, is was to time to tune the ECU.

Standard power is 240bhp and 500nm.

With one of our safe tunes we can guarantee it produces:

290 bhp and 600nm, this was in conjunction with an EGR solution too.
